In layman's terms, Visual Novel Reader will translate Japanese words into English for you.
Also, it enables such features where users can create their subtitles for the VN game, so the language is making more sense than Machinglish (XD this term is so funny...)
As for the reason I use it, VNR can translate both PSP & PC games, which is incredible! Ahem, only for those that its text was recognized, of course. (Hurrah, hook code!)
I'm gonna strangle you like this ლ(ಠ益ಠლ), if you don't know what's the difference between these consoles.
For every Japanese VN for PC, you'll need to set System Locale to Japanese. Coz, it needs to feel like at home to work correctly. ( ́・ω・`)
I know some of you were frustrated by the lack of response and approval from the aniclan site. The below info comes from VNR, and I hope you can decide whether you need one and are worth the wait. (งツ)ว
You don't need an account to access machine translations and subtitles from others. The account is only used to sign your subtitles with your ownership. Other people can override your subtitle with a better one. But they cannot directly edit or delete it without your permission. If you would like to contribute to the game translation, you can get an account here: https://vnr.aniclan.com
VNR is standing on the shoulder of a large amount of user-shared contributions. User privilege describes what you can do to other users' efforts (like subs) with/without their permissions.
You can also use the previous account in Sakuradite, but I won't explain it here. I haven't explored it yet and already forgot my ID. Gee thanks, memory
Register in Aniclan first.
Wait for a certain period until the Aniclan side approves your ID. Too many ppl stuck here haha. I also forgot about this part.
Sign in until you found this description.
Start your VNR then Preferences > Account, fill in 2 columns below with same credentials as Aniclan one.
And remember to set your preferences about the internet for VNR like below. This will help to sign in to your account directly when you start VNR. (｀◔ ω ◔´) Neat o.
Then restart VNR, and you should see a notification like this as a success!
Starting VNR would bring you to this interface. Follow the orange square ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ.
Next is to select the method to find the game. My steps are quite tedious, I know. If you're familiar with it already, feel free to choose another option. It doesn't differ much, I guess.
Select the location of the VN and confirm the game information.
Dunno what this part does, but just make sure it has success, yeah? (ノ・∀・)ノ
This part is the most likely to fail among 60% of VN that I try. Annoying, yes. Only hook code god can save this one, other than that, uh, give up reading that VN. (⊃◜⌓◝⊂) Or try to look the internet for a solution provided by other desperado[s]. ଘ(੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭* ̀ˋ ɪɴᴛᴇʀɴᴇᴛs
Success for adding~ You can see the blue add-on if you hover to the left side.
Now that you've connected hurrah ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ, there are several settings inside VNR that I've adjust.
In the blue add-on > Option, most changes will affect how the game text and its translation appear inside the game.
In Preferences > Embedded, no idea for this one. ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ First option is the important one, I think.
In Preferences > Downloads > Dictionaries
You'll need to download these Dictionaries one by one.
In Preferences > Locations > Translators, LEC and ATLAS are GODLY pair! (╯°□°)╯Admit that!
In Preferences > Translation > Translators. These part settings for offline and online translation. I only need an offline one when reading, so the screenshot below is for offline. If you prefer online, try to adjust this part by yourself. ヘ(◕。◕ヘ)
In Preferences > Translation > Dictionaries. No idea. ಠ_ಠ
In Preferences > Launch. Launch details yada-yada. Oh, when you want to use app locale instead of system one, can set it here.
In Preferences > UI. If you ever thought to change the default image for VNR, this setting is for you. And me, *winks. I also quite like the mouse theme for VNR, soothing light blue. But in case you're boring ppl who prefer boring classic white triangle, meh, can untick here.
In Preferences > i18n, blocked all the languages except English. If you understood some of them, uncheck to enable the subtitles from another user.
After all those steps, the result should be something similar to these. Jeng-jeng ೖ(⑅σ̑ᴗσ̑)ೖ
Two translation from JPN > ENG appear there because I adjust the offline translation to show the result for both ATLAS and LEC. If you're adding the online translation result as well, it will stack there and looks fugly. So your choice. 〆(・∀・＠)

ReplyDeleteUh.. I know it's annoying when you found those fail threads. I only learn about a hook code engine recently and plan to study it later. But I'm not gonna pinning all hope in that tho. Creating a section where it fills with VN which compatible and tested probably the better idea. So most ppl can just filter those that can't and move on.
DeleteI usually hook the vn with textextractor and write the h-code of textextractor down.
DeleteAfter this I use the h-code to hook the vn in VNR.
Be aware that after hooking the game once, you need to restart the game to hook it a second time.
There are other methods to extract a h-code, but this probably the easiest and the only method even I can do.

Hmm, have you get updated version of VNR? Other than that, you could re-hook the whole process again. Or check if there's any configuration affecting the result, such as language restriction in Preferences > i18n.

ReplyDeleteAs for preferences, I barely touched those. Except for the two translator tabs to enable the Atlases for Machine translations.
And machine translations are working perfectly. But I find the community subs were more superior in terms of subtitles, I much prefer to have community subs back though.
Weird. As you can see in link below, Siberia's translation for BWS works just fine. Can check if there's any different setting from this tutorial other than what you mentioned above? Another possiblity is that user subtitle doesn't exist anymore, but i kinda doubt that.

This may be a hunch but the xml file for majiki a-5 is gone. Do you know any datatbase storage for xml file on VNR?

I was using online translations for the most part and I've switched over to hooking offline translators: ATLAS and LEC but they don't seem the most coherent compared to what I was traiditionally using. Did anyone else's VNR just suddenly stop translating this week? I still get the japanese text and everything it just no longer tranlates to English. Literally happened and hasn't gone back since...
ReplyDeleteHello, I tried using VNR to get BWS translation from Siberia and it works fine tho. I think your case is similar with Nate case (up there) where XML for your VN in server is missing or something that i can't pinpoint in server.

DeleteSorry for replying late but gmail didn't notify me. The only solution I found was to download and install the atlas translator (although it doesn't have the best translations). I hope this is fixed soon.

Hate to break it to you guys, but with probability of over 90%, this simply isn't a VNR problem. This is a google being a**holes problem.
ReplyDeleteI have program (called capture2text) which I use for certain translation purposes. As the title suggests, it captures text from picture (visual translation, not hooking) and uses google to translate it. But when I use it too much it stops for a while, 2 hours perhaps. Now, we are not talking about spamming more than 190 symbols per 2-5 sec and its not about crush either, it recognizes the text but it doesn't translate it.
Google probably imposed some quota on how much text an IP can translate for certain amount of time and the fact that ms. 'Luana Alice' was able to bypass that with VPN (effectively changing IP) gives a lot of weight to this argument.
I hope I'm wrong though. Otherwise reading VNs with google translator (the most capable machine translator so far) will be a lot more difficult :(
Hey anonym, this quota thingy was already imposed few years back tho. Also I wouldn't fully trust go*gle over what they translate for Japanese. Personally I rather have few tools at hand, like ATLAS+user dictionary, Mecab & Jparser and Bing. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

ReplyDeleteHey, I looked everywhere for people who had similar issues but ever since I started using a new PC, at first I downloaded VNR and it worked the first time I launched but then after the second and third time I tried to open it, it doesn't start up anymore. The hourglass icon would start up for a second and then it just disappears. (Disappears away from the task manager and just gone completely) Everytime I start it, it just doesn't work.

The hourglass was supposed to be hidden in few secs. Check in Task Manager for any pythonw.exe, that's the process name for VNR. Sometimes VNR panel doesn't appear on its own, need to check taskbar manually for VNR icon and open the Spring Board. As for w10 issue, it works fine in mine. Good luck.
DeleteI tried again, I do know that the hourglass is supposed to appear and disappear but the whole .exe process disappears from the task manager, hidden icons. Looked for it and it wasn't there :/ Any other idea why this is happening?

When I first used VNR, it worked and I could see the translations. Then I had tried to get rid of one English setting I believe (both the machine and the official patch showed up), and I think since then neither has shown up. When the game loads up, VNR loads next to it, and the game says it "detects 14,000" or so comments, but the subtitles never actually show up. Again, this is the patch file which does not require the online translation. I tried to re-download both the cache file and the entirety of VNR itself, I load the game using the Locale application mentioned, and yet no matter what I do that text will not come back. Please help whenever you can.

I tried to go to the aniclan website, but sign up and login were the only options. I was under the impression that guests could submit translations?
ReplyDeleteGuest can't submit, you'll need to register in aniclan. After that put credentials in VNR, then enable the subtitle input.
DeleteVNR no longer works with Google Translate since it locks you out and rarely responds even with a VPN now. Wondering if it is the same for everyone else. I also tried using offline translation like ATLAS with dictionaries, but they pale in comparison to how good google's machine learning is today. I hope there is a work-around.

DeleteI upload VNR files in Download section, if there's any update you can update it from the software itself. As for google problems, sigh, manual T_T.
As for why vnr stopped midway, from my experience (and it still happens) was caused by the processing. In my case, I keep resizing the game window. When I decided the fixed size and just play normally, it's not stopped anymore.
ReplyDeleteAlso btw, don't know if it's just me or other people experienced the same. After vnr active "do not click or touch anything" first. It seems some pc unable to hold its weight thus you need to wait... maybe around five minutes? Well, usually after vnr appeared I click on either game icon display, do it just once and then hover cursor above its window button : exit, mini/maximize. If the button's name not displayed, it's still loading and if you force it either by launch the game or click random place it'll cause not responding state. So after click the game like me earlier, just put your cursor above window button and wait. Basically just to check whether it's still responding or not. Rather than it's not responding and you've to terminate and then open it again, waiting's much safer. Of course as for wanting to know its status, do not look it via task manager because during these waiting period random click even outside vnr produce same result. It's not always five minute, maybe faster. Just check it by repeatedly hover your cursor on window button and if it displaying name (or glowing blue, usually?) then it's ready.
Sometimes not responding also occured when you've started playing and it's actually because the loading is't finish yet which is the reason of my method.
My point is... waiting for a while will not hurt, right? And even after it's in ready state, it's safe to observe it again with the same method to see if it's really ready.
Ah also, don't use skip too much. Even translation need time to load the t3xt and do the translation, and both process really heavy. Take care your pc~

Anyone know how to replace game's original textbox with vnr translation box? I have one game insist in full screen and it's troublesome reading overlap ori and mtl because the latter bg text I set 0% oppacity.

The file_name part can be ridiculously long like 6348098eea73b25385009172fa28ef05, but make sure you copy the same file from other ppl. Hope this helps.

DeleteVNR detects Japanese text via text hook from the game. If VNR can detect Korean text via same hook then maybe doable (i'm no pro, don't trust me lol).

DeleteJust so people Know in the future, theres a third version of vnr (chinese version) works better, also vnr has a problem with some internet providers and won't work, I solved this by using a hotspot, not sure if vpn will work though.
